You don’[t know me

23 10 2011

Nacheska and ElvisToday a young man left my costume Shoppe at an extremely busy time while yelling over his shoulder…”I hope you go out of business”…Let me set this scene, we are family owned, loved and operated and my immensely busy and kind friends help out this season of Halloween costuming out of kindness and enjoyment. It is one week before Halloween… They love waiting on folks, helping them with their costume and the general feeling of merriment. We had a great day with lots of wonderful customers that were pleased and delighted…but this day brought someone that was a little demented and dissatisfied with their life and ability to find a costume to yell out something mean on his way out of my little shoppe. Well I want to say this to this coward…”You don’t know me” In fact, you do not know my staff or the hours and love we put into every costume and accessory. You do not know that I am a mother, grandmother, pet owner, dancer, teacher, business owner, sister, aunt, …you only know that your selfish needs were not met and all the frustration had to come out of you in an ugly way.

So if you are not satisfied with anyone or any business at any time and you have any class at all….just leave….that is enough of a statement. Really no one wants to see your bad side and “You don’t know me” or my family or friends but I know you are someone I do not wish to know or visit my Shoppe again. So do me a favor, pretend I am out of business, because “You don’t know me”….and gratefully I don’t know you.

Happy Make Believe,

Nacheska

Life is like a small business

Alrighty then, I was being interviewed by the author Marilyn Sweet who wrote the book “Profitable 5K Business” on her internet radio show.  Marilyn asked me how I started in the Costume Shop business…well I didn’t actually know I was going in the Costume Shop business, it just evolved…like my life. (and this question made me realize it)

Now anyone who owns a small business knows that what we first thought our business was going to do and be is not precisely what it turned out like.  Actually, that is a lot like us…the way our life starting out, our hopes and dreams and direction may not have evolved exactly how we thought.  I opened my little Shoppe to be a dancewear store…as a dance teacher for 22 years, it was a natural evolution from wearing dancewear all day and night to selling it, since I knew a lot about it.  Several times a year, my students and I would do shows and utilize costumes but I did not give them much thought.  However, much to my surprise, when I opened my little Shoppe, folks were more interested in the few costumes I carried than the leotards, tights, skirts and shoes.  That business was being focused inside the new dance schools themselves as they internalized the dancewear business and did sales right inside the studio.  I did not know a lot about costumes outside the dance performance arena but I soon did some research and learned what my customers wanted and where I could get it…but there were some expensive mistakes along the way since this was not initially my area of expertise.

When I was a little girl I knew I wanted to be a dance teacher…as a young woman I wanted to be a college professor of the dance.  But as a child of the 50′s I wanted the wife mother to be in the equasion too.  Whew, boy was I wanting it all.  I married a stranger, divorced with a young child, worked 4 jobs, went to college 3-7 hours a semester and finally graduated 10 years later….hmmm, not what I envisioned in the beginning…and I was no closer to that college job as I was still working on the degree to get me there…then I remarried, opened a studio, had another baby and tried to make it all work.  This was not my original plan but as anyone would, I went with it.

In business, my first little shop just about broke even in 3 years…but something came up…a career in acting.  Since I was still performing a little in the dance arena, I stumbled on an opportunity to impersonate Marilyn Monroe and it bloomed into a better business than the Shop…so I closed the shop and went on tour for a year or so. (what happened to selling dancewear?)  But the glamour of being Ms. Monroe soon waned and I settle back in Texas looking for another opportunity while temping in an office.  It was handed to me in the form of teaching/training folks in the Web computer arena in a specialize medical field. (not the professor job but maybe I was getting closer?)  The corporate environment was hard on this artistic spirit so I looked into an opportunity to have a small sideline business in the costume dancewear business I still was intrigued with so I took some of my corporate earnings and sublet part of a storefront and paid someone else to run it…renting and selling costumes all year…and after a year, I was pushed to make a decision due to my fathers waning health and a layoff by the corporation…they wanted to keep me full time and I was only working part time…so I went full speed ahead and worked in my little store and tried to build up the business.

In business, we have to make policies…about the employees, the customers, the hours, the marketing etc….and when we open our small business we have a vision but we need to be able to yield to what life brings and our customers needs.  One of the wisest tidbits I gleaned from another business person was in the Book “Pour your heart into it” by Howard Schultz and that is “never say never.”  Policies need to yield, we need to yield and bend and weave through life…just call me Gumby!

…there is so much more to write but my Shop calls me…

Is Texting the next opportunity to be rude…

4 07 2009

As a Shop owner, there is rarely a day when a customer comes into the store that is not huddled over their phone while trying to do business with me…they want service but their attention is distracted and I wonder if the event they are going to (since they need something from my fun make believe store) will have their undivided attention.  I know I did not get their attention.  I have seen teens out on dates sitting at a table texting.  Are they texting each other?  Have they lost all social skills?  My opinion does not count to them but even college students have seen that it is distracting  when discussing it among their peers.  There are some that just don’t get it still…that they are saying loud and clear …this person on this text is more important than you are….once again “Do I matter to you?”  and the offender is clearly saying no.

thumbnailtextThis may be the next opportunity for a book in Sociology,  “the effects of cell and text use in communication” (if it has not already been written)  The question is, do I now add this to my ban of cell phone use while requesting service?  Now I say (along with the signs in my Shop) “I will be happy to help you when you are off of your cell “.  What verbage is next? I will be happy to help you when you are off of your PDA?   Don’t text while you try to talk to me?  Talking is quicker so put the phone away for another time at play???  If anyone who owns a business has come up with a pleasant solution please let me know…because these are nice people with an ugly habit.

*Here are some notes from folks in the know about cell phone/IPOD/texting ediquette:
“Do I need to remove both earbuds from my IPOD when running into a friend or client?”

Jodi R. R. Smith, author of From Clueless to Class Act: Manners for the Modern Woman ($10, amazon.com):  If you’re having more than a two-minute conversation, then, yes, both buds need to come out―whether you turn off the device or not. And that goes for your Bluetooth earpiece, too.
Joni Blecher, editorial director of LetsTalk.com: Yes. People want to know that the person they’re talking to is really paying attention to them.
Sue Fox, founder and president of EtiquetteSurvival.com: Remember―etiquette is all about making the other person more comfortable. How comfortable could your friend be trying to talk to you when you’ve got something in your ears?

Remember, you are going to have a lot of fun in my little Shoppe exploring, discovering and playing pretend…so put that discussion on hold and look around (not down)…

Avon Calling

10 06 2008

not just lipstick anymoreMy lovely daughter was looking for a work-from-home career and asked my advice as to which company she should best affiliate herself with.  This was a no-brainer to me as I watched my mom order Avon and I ordered Avon products for years and loved everything I ever got…but boy has this company changed.  They have great new products…clothes, shoes, jewelry and a hip new line called MARK for the younger generation.  This is truly not my Mom’s AVON though Skin so soft is still the best stuff to do all of the following: (and more)

*as a makeup remover
* Helps to relieve dry, itchy skin
* Cleans of adhesive marks from sticky tape and adhesives
* Cleans most ink, markers paint off of your skin
* can be used for tanning oil but caution no SPF in the original
*Got greasy hands from working on the car?  This is good stuff for grease monkies.
* 2 capfuls in to your foot soaker will moisturize them while you soak your aches away
*helpful with chewing gum in hair or skin removal
* Use cotton ball dipped in AVON SSS to keep ants out. Rub the cotton ball around window seals and doors…also I poured on an ant bed and bye-bye anties…
* KILLS LICE Safely! Fully saturate hair with AVON SSS. Let it set for 15 minutes! Wash thoroughly! You may want to wash the hair 2-3 times to get the oily look out. It is said dish detergent works great with just one wash to get the oil out!
* Also will keep spiders out by wiping all wood framed doors and windows with AVON SSS.
* Removes glue and other adhesives from glass, metals and most plastics.
* Remove soap scum from shower doors and shower curtains, along with bathroom fixtures by using SSS as you would your other cleaners
* Great for using on pipe joints that will not slip together
* Cleans ink and most stains off most vinyl and painted surfaces.
* Cleans most heavy oil and grease from non-porous surfaces.
*for pets is a great flea dip when mixed with water and conditions the animal
*can be utilized on horses too as an insect repellent

If you access the internet, you will find TONS of uses…though admittedly, I think the smell is just ok…insects HATE it and lots of humans love it.  So wooHoo…an oil with many uses.

Now after my daughter got into Avon she realized that having some peeps work with her would be great so I signed up and so did several of her friends and we are all Avon Beauty Babes…believe me, they are a kewl company with something for everyone…they have Hannah Montana stuff, Sponge bob items and even High School Musical items for the tweenies!!  I am definitely into the skin care and jewelry to keep me looking good for my many performances as a dancer…

If you haven’t seen a catalog lately check it out at www.youravon.com/ngentry-combs or check up at www.avon.com for a beauty advisor in your area (yes, we still give lots of great samples)  They have kept up in the 21st century with some great websites that you can order from so give them another look see!  You might find yourself looking better too!

Cookies!

18 02 2008

I love cookies…I admit that. If you know me, you know that though I am a dance and fitness mommy for several wonderful folks, I love cookies. Now let me clarify…I do not love just any cookies. Like most in my generation, I love homemade cookies or fresh cookies. Why? (when Oreos are so good?) It’s like cookies this…they evoke thoughts of times when neighbors sent cookies to welcome you into the neighborhood. Times when money was scarce (non-existent) but there was sugar flour, eggs love and time so the gift was something from the kitchen that said “you are special”…”you rock”…”I love you” ….”I want to get to know you” (enough to mess up my kitchen, watch the oven, and give you cookies I want to eat myself)

Weirdly, this blog entry is not about that…it is about cookies someone has given to me! Not me personally….friend mommy crazy redhead…but me the BUSINESSWOMAN…wow!!! These cookies were thank you cookies from an organization/individual and from a customer who I went a wee bit out of my way to assist…(and both in one week!)

In both cases I did a little driving out of my way at a very busy time to drop off a forgotten costume piece for a child and then in the other case, picked up a costume a bit early that was needed for a Christmas Parade. Neither was a huge inconvenience but the payoff was Yummy….for the child I was repaid with scrumptious chocolate chip muffin style cookies with a reeses mini peanut butter cup in the middle…slurp!!! In the other case, the dropped off goody was soft melt in your mouth sugar cookies from a local bakery….gone in a flash!

Now this may sound like a description of how much I like cookies but it is not…It is a reminder that we often will not give the gift of time or just plain cannot give that gift…but when we do, the payoff is GREAT….it is cookies…in the form of a kind word, an appreciative smile, and a new friend or if you are very lucky….you’ll get COOKIES!!!!
